TRAVEL BLOG THURSDAY - ALASKA
HOW TO DO ALASKA IN 24 HOURS || ANCHORAGE & SEWARD || ALASKA || USA || August 2017
I found a flight deal from Seattle, Washington to Anchorage, Alaska for $134.90 round trip on Jetblue. I’d always wanted to go to Alaska but never planned it until I found the deal. I get notifications for flight deals everyday on TheFlightDeal.com for flights out of Seattle and other cities. My neighbor could only watch Aja (my dog) on Friday night and Saturday so I really only had 24 hours to take this trip. This is the itinerary I came up with for how to do Alaska in 24 hours for under $350 (including flight, rental car, gas “lodging” [ha!], and food). Perfect for those with big adventure goals but little time.
When I landed in Anchorage, I drove two and a half hours south to Seward, Alaska which is where most of my activities for the day were planned. I researched a free campsite to park at before I started my travels. Once I got there, it was super dark but I saw a few other RVs parked in the same vicinity so I figured it would be okay to stay. I heard the sounds of water flowing so I assumed I was parked by a river or something. I locked my doors, grabbed my blanket, got in the trunk of the SUV I rented and went to sleep. Yes, I slept in the car; that’s why I keep a dream catcher with me at all times. No, it’s not my first time ( I did it in Toronto/Niagara Falls, I’ve done it on all my weekend road trips from Pittsburgh, PA to Raleigh, NC driving after work to hang out with family and friends back when I used to live in PA, I do it at lunch at work, and I’ll do it again!) #CarCamping yay!!!
When I woke up, I was surprised to find a huge river with a mountain behind right in front of where I parked! The day was filled with beautiful surprises like that. Alaska is one of those places where you see so much beautiful stuff that you’re fed up with it by the end of the day, ha!
I ate at a lodge (Seward Windsong Lodge Restaurant) that happened to be near by where I parked. I also used their bathroom to brush my teeth and what not.
After breakfast, I went to the dog sledding activity I booked prior to traveling. While this was an educational activity, I would NEVER do it again!
I don’t recommend this excursion because of how the dogs’ living conditions were. They were not clean and the dogs were chained up outside. The dogs did not look happy at all despite the staff reassuring us the dogs were fine. I call BS! The dogs looked so sad that we wanted to save the puppies from the seemingly rough future ahead of them. All of us on the excursion were mutually side-eyeing the staff the whole time.
The remainder of the trip was spent hiking to glaciers, driving to lakes, driving past huge mountain ranges, washing my hands in waterfalls on the side of the road, rollin’ up on beautiful stuff, jaw drop, take picture, repeat until it was time to go to the airport! I even got to see salmon spawning, or whatever it is they do at that time of year, in a stream on my way to the dog sledding excursion. That was unexpected.
Most gorgeous 24 hours I spent prior to Maui!
Thanks for reading all these words!
Love ya!
